Objectives
This SERENITY study was designed to investigate the effectiveness of atypical antipsychotics (AAPs) as defined by the three areas of patient functioning, efficacy and tolerability in general practice.
MethodsBetween January 2007 and June 2008, 252 patients were enrolled, as planned, in this non-interventional study in Belgium. Inclusion criteria were patients 18-65 years old, willing and able to participate, diagnosed with Schizophrenia or Bipolar Disorder and currently in a manic episode and for whom the general practitioner (GP) decided to prescribe an AAP.
Patient demographics, selection criteria, psychiatric and medical history and condition were assessed at Visit 1. Additional psychotropic drugs, name and dose of AAP, the QoL questionnaire Q-LES-Q-16, the Sheehan Disability Scale (SDS) for patient wellbeing, the Clinical Global Impression (CGI) and Patient Global Impression of Change (PGIC) scores for clinical efficacy and tolerability were assessed at Visit 1 (day 0), Visit 2 (week 4) and at Visit 3 (week 8).
ResultsA mean change of 24.62 was observed in the Q-LES-Q results. The SDS total score decreased substantially with a mean change of -9.26. Number of days lost, and the number of unproductive days, at work or school decreased with a mean change of -1.88 and -2.31, respectively. CGI-S scores decreased by a mean -1.92 and the CGI-I and PGIC scores also decreased. A weak but positive correlation was seen between the medication satisfaction and the efficacy, tolerability and patients’ well-being.
ConclusionsThis study indicates that GP-based management of antipsychotic treatment is effective in the community.

Associations between infants' frontal EEG asymmetry and temperamental negative affectivity (NA) across infants' first year of life and the potential moderating role of maternal prenatal depressive symptoms were examined prospectively in infants (n = 242) of mothers at elevated risk for perinatal depression. In predicting EEG, in the context of high prenatal depressive symptoms, infant NA and frontal EEG asymmetry were negatively associated at 3 months of age and positively associated by 12 months of age. By contrast, for low depression mothers, infant NA and EEG were not significantly associated at any age. Postnatal depressive symptoms did not add significantly to the models. Dose of infants' exposure to maternal depression mattered: infants exposed either pre- or postnatally shifted from a positive association at 3 months to a negative association at 12 months; those exposed both pre- and postnatally shifted from a negative association at 3 months to a positive association at 12 months. Prenatal relative to postnatal exposure did not matter for patterns of association between NA and EEG. The findings highlight the importance of exploring how vulnerabilities at two levels of analysis, behavioral and psychophysiological, co-occur over the course of infancy and in the context of mothers' depressive symptomatology.

This paper discusses four aspects of fabrication of an active address liquid crystal array from laser recrystallized polycrystalline silicon: recrystallization, processing, device performance and array fabrication. The recrystallization process produces material which is imperfect by silicon wafer standards, but which contains few incoherent defects. The material was used to fabricate discrete n-channel MOS devices which had consistent off currents of 10−11 amps (0.4pA/μm of channel width) and on currents of 10−4 amps. Device threshold is controlled to + 200 mV and channel mobility is 500 to 600 cm2 /V-sec. The crossovers between Al/1% Si source and degenerately doped polycrystalline silicon gate lines were fabricated by use of high temperature reflowed, phosphorus doped chemical vapor deposited SiO2. Completed arrays had very few defects (no crossover defects and 0.3% bad devices).
